Hillsboro rode a pair of second-place finishes by its doubles teams to place third as a team Saturday at the first Central Kansas League tennis tournament, which was hosted by Smoky Valley at Lindsborg.
Hesston and Smoky Valley tied for the team title with 57 points. Hillsboro scored 42, followed by Sterling (37), Pratt (34), Lyons (27), Haven (17) and Kingman (0).
The Trojans? No. 1 doubles duo of Becky Faber and Emma Heyen lost to Allie Dwyer and Summer Schlotterback of Lyons in the finals, 6-3, 6-1. To get to the title match, Faber and Heyen defeated Samantha Kettering and Hannah Taylor of Pratt, 9-1, and Danika Good and Morgan Schrock of Hesston, 6-0, 6-1.
In No. 2 doubles, Elise Heyen and Courtney Weber lost in the finals to Rachel Shogren and Ashley Weaver of Hesston, 6-3, 6-1, after defeating Kaitlyn West?fall and Amanda Reichenberger of Haven, 9-1, and Abby Gengler and Emma Flynn of Smoky Valley, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the first two rounds.
In singles, No. 1 player Hayley Pankratz placed sixth, losing to Lauren McClain of Pratt, 9-2, and Rachel Norberg of Smoky Valley, 9-2, in pool play, then dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Hailey Davis of Haven in the fifth-place match.
In No. 2 singles, Aubrey Meier placed fifth, losing to Jessica Van Ranken of Smoky Valley, 9-0, Adele Loomis of Pratt, 9-1, and Anna Brasher of Sterling, 9-5.
Coming?The Trojans were schedule to complete their regular season Tuesday at Abilene.
HHS will enter post-season play Friday and Saturday with the regional tournament at Genesis Tennis Center, 1551 N. Rock Road, Wichita.
Also in the challenging field are Douglass, Ellsworth, Hutch?inson Trinity, Lyons, Neodesha, St. Mary?s Colgan, Sacred Heart, Sterling, Wichita Collegiate and the host school, Wichita Independent.
The top six singles and top six doubles finishers at each regional tournament will qualify for state competition.
