Hillsboro?s young tennis team accomplished Thursday the same thing its senior-laden squad did a year ago: claiming first place at the Sterling Invita?tional.

The Trojans accumulated 20 points to outpace Hutchinson Trinity with 14 and Sterling and St. John with 13.

In a round-robin format, the Weber sisters claimed both singles titles. Courtney, Hillsboro?s only senior, went 3-0 in No. 1 singles, defeating Brishna Flores of Trinity 8-2, Ashley Smith of St. John 8-0 and Emily Hanes of Sterling 8-3.

Freshman Allison Weber breezed through No. 2 singles with an 8-2 win over Megan Coon of Trinity and 8-0 sweeps of St. John?s Martesia Tyus and Sterling?s Ryce Stuckey.

?Courtney and Allison played well in singles, despite the severe (heat) conditions,? coach Bob Woelk said.

In No. 1 doubles, Peyton Loewen and Erin Winter posted a 1-2 record. They defeated Kristina Enslin??ger and Baylee Reade of Trinity, 8-7 (7-5), then lost to Racheal Davis and Sara Steinman of Trinity 3-6, and to Vanessa Agbo and Sarah Wheeler of Sterling 4-8.

?Erin and Peyton showed promise at No. 1 doubles,? Woelk said. ?They played well, especially in the match against Trinity. They won several deuce games and then took the tiebreaker. They had many deuce games even in the matches they lost.?

Hillsboro?s No. 2 doubles of Bailey Kaufman and Claire Heyen also went 1-2. They lost to Amanda Walls and Joy Fesen of Trinity 0-6 and Sierra Reed and Kendra Spangenberg of St. John 3-6, before defeating Megan Schroeder and Kendrah Payne of Sterling 6-4.

?Claire and Bailey won their first varsity match, which was fun,? Woelk said.

Wichita Collegiate won the team title with 50 points, followed by Hesston (37), Pratt (33), Hillsboro (14), Haven (11) and Nickerson (5).

The teams were clustered in two pools. Each entry played two matches in pool play, then were matched according to the outcome with an entry from the other pool.
