On the strength of one fourth-place finish and three fifth-place performances, the Hillsboro High tennis team placed sixth among eight teams at the Trojan Invitat?ional in Hillsboro Thursday.

Wichita Independent claimed the title with 64 points, followed by Sterling (41), Hutchinson Trinity (35), Chapman (34), Circle (34), Hillsboro (33) and Wichita Collegiate (28). Sacred Heart entered two singles players.

?Though we finished fifth officially, we were only a couple of points from third. A different outcome anywhere would have put us in the money,? coach Bob Woelk said.

Becky Faber was the only Trojan entry to win in the opening round. She defeated Laura Thurlow of Cheney 8-1 in No. 1 singles, then lost her semifinals match to Lizzie Degner of Trinity 8-3 and the third-place match to Colleen Zirkle of Independent 8-0.

Emma Heyen, playing No. 2, lost 8-2 to Lahshmi Nagireddy of Independent 8-2, then defeated Christi Pignatiello of Collegiate 8-5 and Megan Cartwright of Circle 8-3 to place fifth.

In No. 1 doubles, Courtney Weber and Elise Heyen lost to Crain and Giles of Circle, 8-4, then defeated Brummett and Parker of Trinity 8-5 and Brashear and Buckman of Sterling 8-6.

In No. 2 doubles, Aubrey Meier and Hayley Pankratz lost to Harris and Janzen of Circle 8-6, then beat Rachel Schneider and Lexus Sinclair of Hillsboro 8-1 and Hanes and Nielsen of Sterling 8-7 (7-3).

Trojans Schneider and Sinclair as well as Peyton Loewen and Erin Winter filled the void in the doubles brackets created by the absence of teams from Sacred Heart. Both local pairs went 0-3.

Collegiate?Competing at Collegiate on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the doubles team of Elise Heyen and Courtney Weber won a big match against Moxley and Holden from the home team 8-6, then lost their next two matches.

Becky Faber, playing doubles at this tournament with Emma Heyen, lost all three of matches.

In her first foray into singles, Hayley Pankratz went 1-2, while Aubrey Meier went 0-3.

Coming? The Trojans were scheduled to compete Tuesday, Sept. 29, in a quadrangular at Circle. Their next competition will be the league meet on Saturday at Wichita Collegiate. Matches are set to start at 9 a.m.

?This will be one of the toughest league tournaments in Class 3A,? coach Bob Woelk said. ?We would like to earn some key wins there for regionals seeding purposes.?

Regional assignments were expected to be announced this week.
