HHS tennis team finishes 7th at home invitational

The Hillsboro girls’ tennis team finished seventh among eight schools in the Trojan Invitation Thurs­day at the Sports Complex.

In No. 1 singles, Hills­boro’s Elli Weisbeck went 0-3, losing each match by an 8-2 score: first to Rachel Duer of Chapman, to Katri­cia Hirsh of Nicker­son and then to Caeli Clennan of Hutchin­son Trinity.

In No. 2 singles, Callie Bernhardt placed seventh with a 1-2 record, losing to Maddie Mairs of Wichita Collegiate, 8-2, losing to teammate Shelby Johnson, 8-3, then defeating Kiah Zambo of Sterling, 8-3, in the seventh-place match.

Johnson lost her first-round match to Summer Scharenberg of Circle, 8-0, and ended her day with an 8-0 loss to Kayleigh Boyd of Douglass on a 5-1 default.

The No. 1 doubles team of Cheyenne Bernhardt and Kyla Isaac placed third. They defeated Comley and Simp­son of Sterling in the first round, 8-5, then lost in the semifinals to Adams and Chase of Circle, 8-3, before bouncing back to defeat Foltz and Grimmett of Doug­lass, 8-6, to secure third.

Meanwhile, Hillsboro’s second No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Jury and Jessica Ryder lost to Davis and Loy of Chap­man, 8-0, and to Graham and Diaz of Hutch Trinity, 8-0.

In No. 2 doubles, Kayla Gunn and Kailee Funk lost to Schweizer and San Miguel of Sterling, 8-3, to Mattar and Newman of Collegiate, 8-3, then defeated Hubbs and Rosenberg of Nickerson, 8-3, to claim seventh place.

As a team, the Trojans placed seventh. Circle won the title with 67 points, followed by Chapman 51, Hutch Trinity 36, Sterling 32, Wichita Collegiate 32, Doug­lass 30, Hillsboro 21 and Nickerson 9.

Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to compete Sept. 26 at Ellsworth, and then participate in the Central Kansas League meet Sept. 30 at Larned. Matches begin at 3 p.m.
