HHS tennis fourth at Trojan Invite


On the strength of two fourth-place performances, the Hillsboro tennis team finished in a fourth-place tie at its Trojan Invitational Thurs?day afternoon at the Sports Complex.

The Trojans compiled 29 team points to tie Hutch Trinity for a mid-pack finish in the eight-team field.

Sterling won the title with 64 points, followed by Chap?man (56) and Circle (55) with Nickerson (20), Wichita Collegiate (16) and Douglass (11) filling the lower slots.

Senior Allison Gray (1-2) earned one of the fourth-place finishes in No. 1 singles. Gray won her opening match 8-0 over Bri Fenno of Douglass, then lost 8-0 in the semifinals to Allie Gahagan of Circle, the eventual champion. Gray then dropped an 8-2 decision to Abi?gail Chew?ing of Chap?man.

The doubles team of Han?nah Funk and Ellian Weis?beck (1-2) placed fourth in No. 2 doubles. They started with an 8-1 win over Harris and Enslinger of Trinity, then lost 8-1 to Loy and Duer of Chapman in the semifinals and 8-3 to Allison and Pierce of Circle in the third-place match.

In No. 1 doubles, Anna Glanzer and Mary Leihy (1-2) placed fifth. They lost 8-0 in the first round to Lanham and Garcia of Trinity, won the consolation semifinals 8-4, then defeated Brown and Cole?man of Collegiate in the fifth-place match, 8-5.

In No. 2 singles, Shelby Johnson (0-3) lost 8-0 to eventual champion McKenzie Thrasher of Sterling in the opening match, then 8-2 to Katricia Hirsh of Nickerson and 8-4 to Caeli Clennan of Trinity in the match for seventh-place.

Coming?Hillsboro will host the Central Kansas League Tournament Satur?day. Matches start at 9 a.m. at the Sports Complex.
