HHS tennis fourth at home invitational

Hillsboro’s girls’ tennis team opened the season Aug. 29 with a fourth-place finish among the six teams competing at the Hillsboro Invita­tional held at the sports complex.

“I think the girls did a great job this first meet,” coach Erin Hein said. “They had some tough matches through the evening, but overall they were able to hang with the competition.”

In No. 1 singles, Ellian Weisbeck lost both pool matches, 8-7, in a tiebreaker with Nicker­son’s Hirsch, then an 8-0 defeat to Kreh­biel of Hesston.

In bracket play, Weisbeck defeated Chase of Haven 8-5 to claim fifth place in the field of six players.

In No. 2 singles pool play, Olivia Jury lost 8-0 to Mairs from Wichita Collegiate and 8-2 to Jackson from Pratt. Team­mate Callie Bernhardt lost 8-4 to Brown of Nicker­son and 8-0 to Unruh of Hesston. In bracket play, Jury defeated Bernhardt 8-5 for fifth place.

In No. 1 doubles, Chey­enne Bernhard and Kayla Isaac lost 8-1 to Hubbard and Russell of Hesston, then 8-3 to Ashbrook and Glass of Collegiate. In bracket play, the Trojans defeated Kauffman and Pound of Haven 8-5 to claim fifth place.

In No. 2 doubles pool play, Kayla Gunn and Kailee Funk defeated Hubbs and Rosen­berg of Nickerson 8-3, then lost to Martin and Martin of Hesston, 8-0. In bracket play, the Trojan duo defeated Keck­ner and Steg­man of Pratt for third place.

“I was pleased with everyone’s effort at the meet,” Hein said. “We definitely need to continue working on our serves.”

Coming—The Trojans will travel to Lindsborg Thursday for the Smoky Valley Invitational, then compete at the Hesston Invitational on Saturday.
