The Hillsboro tennis team capped a busy seven days with a fifth-place finish in the final Mid-Central Activities Associa?tion league tennis meet Monday in Hillsboro.
The team also competed at a quadrangular in Sterling Friday and the Hesston Invitational last Tuesday.
Wichita Collegiate won the MCAA title Monday with 75 points. The Spartans were followed by Smoky Valley (71), Hesston (62), Sterling (52), Hillsboro (32), Hoisington (27), Haven (23) and Ellinwood (18).
The Trojans? best performances came in No. 1 singles and doubles.
Grant Shewey lost in the opening round but came back to win his next two matches, including a 9-1 win over Ethan Smith of Hoisington, for fifth.
Taylor Hagen and Jarod Hamm defeated Knepp and Childs of Haven in the fifth-place match after losing in the opening round and winning in the consolation semifinals.
Sam Bookless went 0-3 in No. 2 singles to place eighth, while Jesse Allen and Harry Faber were 1-2 in No. 2 doubles to place sixth.
At the Sterling quad, Hillsboro, with six points, placed third behind the home team (9) and Hesston (8) and ahead of Ellsworth (1).
The Trojans got second-place performances from Shewey in No. 1 singles (2-1), Hagen and Hamm in No. 1 doubles (2-1) and Allen and Faber in No. 2 doubles. Jonathan King went 0-3 in No. 2 singles.
Hesston won both singles divisions, and Sterling took both doubles titles.
At the 10-team Hesston Invitational, the format was one large bracket in both singles and doubles.
In singles, Shewey went 2-2 for the day to finish 10th and Bookless, at 0-3, placed 20th. In doubles, Hagen and Hamm placed eighth with a 1-3 record, and Allen and Faber finished, 14th at 2-3.
?The guys certainly played some of their best tennis this week during the Hesston tourney and the Sterling quad,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?Hopefully, our consistency will continue to improve as our guys can compete well at regionals and state if they play consistently well.
Coming?The Trojans were scheduled to compete at the last Mid-Central Activities Associa?tion league meet Monday at Hillsboro.
They will play in the Class 3-2-1A regional hosted by Wichita Collegiate Saturday. Joining the Trojans and the host school at the tournament will be Douglass, Hutchinson Trinity, Elyria Christian, Neodesha and Sterling. Matches will begin around 10:30 a.m.
