HHS sweeps triangular from Claflin, Lyons

Hillsboro got its season off to a solid start last Tuesday with a sweep of both teams at a triangular at Brown Gymnasium.

The Trojans started the evening with a hard-fought 25-21, 21-25, 25-22 win over Claflin, which was ranked sixth in Class 1A in the preseason polls, then followed that with a 25-19, 25-11 win over a young Lyons squad.

?They?re a very athletic team,? HHS coach Sandy Arnold said of Claflin.

?They were very scrappy and returned a lot of stuff. That?s something we need to work on?we expect the ball to be dead, and we weren?t always ready for the stuff they brought back over.?

Arnold was pleased with her team?s passing, which had been her primary concern in the preseason.

?I was pleasantly surprised with that,? she said. ?I think that just makes everything else go a whole lot smoother.?

As expected, Arnold also saw a lot of things for her team to work on following its debut.

?There were times when we probably scored a lot of points for the other team by hitting the ball out of bounds or in the net,? she said.

?Our defense needs to get better, and we need to react quicker to all kinds of balls that come over the net, whether they be attack balls or free balls or slop balls. We need to be on our toes more and get ready to move.?
