HHS seniors wrestle big at Hoisington

With two weight-class champions in a seven-member lineup, Hillsboro placed fifth among seven schools at the Hoisington Cardinal Corner Wrestling Tournament Friday.

Hillsboro?s two seniors, Tanner Jones and Tyrell Thiessen, won their respective weight classes with 5-0 records, Jones at 170 pounds and Thiessen at 285.

?I am pleased to see these two seniors leading the way for this team,? coach Scott O?Hare said. ?They are competing pretty well right now.

?Tanner was a little sluggish in a couple of his matches, and he had a couple close ones going into the third period,? he said. ?However, he remained in control every match and took over in the third period. He recorded one fall, three major decisions and won a hard-fought 4-2 decision.

?Tyrell dominated the tournament, winning all five of his matches by fall. He only had one match go into the second period.?

Meanwhile, freshman Austin Cross finished second at 145 pounds with a 2-1 record and junior Preston Nelson went 2-2 to place third at 152 pounds.

?Cross continues to place well for us each week,? O?Hare said. ?His only loss was to Demel from Hoisington, who is currently ranked second in Class 3-2-1A. He is winning the matches we fully expect him to win; however, he has struggled against some opponents that are stronger than him. He has to continue to improve in some areas of his wrestling to enable him to push the top wrestlers in the state.

O?Hare said Nelson had a ?decent? tournament once he got past his opening match

?He started a little flat, but finished the day with two convincing wins and a hard-fought 5-0 loss to Carroll of Marion,? he said. ?Although he is making some nice progress, he continues to make costly mistakes. Once we convince him that sound technique will still work with his open style of wrestling, he will be able to match up with anyone.?

The three remaining Trojans each placed fifth in their respective classes. Sophomore Jesse Meier went 1-4 at 160 pounds, freshman Franklin Jost lost all four of his matches at 182 pounds and junior Matt Reeh went 1-4 at 285.

JV at Marion?Four Trojans competed Saturday at a junior-varsity tournament at Marion. Levi Mendoza placed fifth at 182 pounds; Zac Ghahremanzadeh placed first and Franklin Jost third in a different bracket at 182; Matt Reeh placed second and Dermot Morey fourth in separate brackets at 285.

Coming?Hillsboro will compete Saturday in a duals tournament at Southeast of Saline. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
