Ten members of Hillsboro’s cross-country team got an early exposure to the challenging 5-kilometer state championship course they hope to return at the Wamego Country Club.
Caleb Rempel led the trio of Trojan running in the varsity boys’ race. Rempel traversed the hilly terrain in 21 minutes, 37.5 seconds to place 83rd among 131 finishers.
Tucker Moss was only 12 places behind Rempel, finishing 95th in 21:58.1. Orin Blecha finished 130th in 29:38.8.
The best time of the day came from freshman Caleb Diener, who outran a field of 163 runners to claim first place in the junior varsity race in 19:58.9. That time would have placed him 40th in the varsity race.
Running with Diener in the JV race were fellow freshman Tristan Reed, who placed ninth in 20:49.8, and sophomore Jason Latham, who placed 111th in 25:08.
Meanwhile, Abby Driggers completed the course in 26:26.4 to place 55th among 92 finishers in the varsity girls’ race.
In the JV race, freshman Iris Klein placed sixth among 101 finishers in 25:03.8, Millie Sechrist was 67th in 30:35.6 and Maddie Suderman finished 81st in 31:59.
“I thought the kids ran with toughness and determination, which you have to do on this course to be successful,” coach Robert Haude said. “We had a number of runners who got their first experience on the Wamego course. I am hopeful that this meet will be a springboard to the continued success of each runner.”
Coming—The Trojans will run at the Herington Invitational on Thursday. Races begin at 4 p.m.
