HHS, MHS compete at Marion CKTL

Sienna Kaufman won the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 6.25 inches in the Class 1A-3A division. Kaufman also placed sixth in long jump with a leap of 15-1/2.

Abby Sechrist placed eighth in the 1A-3A 800-meter run in 2:36.61.

Wes Shaw placed third in discus, Elite Division, with a throw of 171-4, which broke the Hillsboro High School record of 166-11 that he set earlier in the week.

Shaw also placed second in shot put in the Elite Divi­sion with a throw of 54- 8.25.

“These athletes did an incredible job today in their respective events,” coach Dennis Boldt said. “There was excellent competition today that brought out great performances. Wes Shaw’s new school record in the discus was featured the nation’s best high school throw of the season.”

Marion—The Hillsboro boys’ and girls track and field teams made their debut April 10 at a six-school Central Kansas Track League meet hosted by Marion.

Hillsboro’s teams placed second behind Hesston in their respective gender divisions. Hesston boys scored 173 points to Hillsboro’s 135, and the Swather girls won with 143 point to the Trojans’ 126.

Junior Wes Shaw put on a strong show in the throws, winning the shot put with a heave of 54 feet 6.5 inches, and the javelin with a mark of 144-5.

Shaw also shattered his HHS discus record with a throw of 166-11, which was 9 feet, 8 inches farther than the record he set in 2017. Shaw placed second to Marion’s Tyler Palic, the 2017 Class 2A champion, who threw four inches farther at this meet.

Following are Hills­boro’s other top-three performances in their respec­tive events.

Kaden Ward won pole vault (12-0), was second in long jump (19-7.5), second in high jump (6-0) and second in the 200-meter dash (25.64) for 34 team points.

Freshman Caleb Diener placed second in the 800-meter run (2:22.15) and third in the 3,200 meters (11:36.93).

Freshman Dillon Boldt placed second in the 1,600 meters (5:38.71).

Josiah Driggers placed third in long jump (19-6).

Hillsboro’s 4×800-meter relay placed second (10:09.54) and the 4×400 placed third (3:58.45).

Girls highlights

Senior Abby Sechrist led the Trojan girls by winning the 1,600-meters (6:08.03) and 800-meter runs (2:52.09).

Eva Franz placed third in triple jump (30-8) and third in the 400-meter dash (1:09.72).

Freshmen Iris Klein was the runner-up in high jump (4-6) and Callie Bern­hardt was third in the 1,600 (6:47.43).

Addie Berens placed third in the 300-meter hurdles (56.63) and long jump (15-0).

Freshman Jessica Saun­ders placed second in shot put (32-0.75) and discus (110-3).

Freshman Kinsey Kleiner was second in long jump (15-3.25) and Sienna Kaufman was second in pole vault (9-0).

The Trojans’ two relays each placed third: the 4×400 (4:43.62) and the 4×100 (54.87).
