Hillsboro?s 15th-place finish Friday at the Marion County Invitational capped a marathon week of competition for the Trojans.
Hampered by inconsistent performances, Hillsboro?s team score of 789 left the Trojans in last place in the 36-hole tournament. Sterling won with a team score of 650.
Individually, Devin Dick led Hillsboro, finishing 45th among 89 golfers with a 183. He was followed by Evan Ollenburger, who was 68th at 199, Andrew Meier 70th at 201, Kyler Borg 78th at 209, Daniel Kenney 89th at 211 and Cassie Allen 84th at 222.
One week earlier, Hillsboro placed fifth at the Sacred Heart Invitational. Dick placed ninth individually with a 93. He was followed by Meier at 103, Borg 104, Ollenburger 110 and Kenney 120.
Following a junior varsity tournament May 2 at Sterling, where they placed second as a team, the Trojans returned to varsity action the following day at Hal?stead. They placed fifth there at 397.
Individually, Dick led with a 91, followed by Kenney 96, Ollen?burger 100, Borg 110, Allen 113 and Meier 120.
?This past week was a real test for these guys,? coach Scott O?Hare said. ?All of these guys played at least 63 holes of competitive golf over a seven-day period and three of them played 81 holes of golf in competition during that same stretch.?
Considering a couple of the courses were knew to the team, and practice time was limited, O?Hare called the week a good learning experience.
?They had to battle through some tough weather conditions at times, they had to remain strong and focused to push through the 36-hole tournament on Friday, and they had to learn to make corrections and adapt to different courses, especially the putting greens.?
O?Hare said finding some consistency will be key if the team hopes to be competitive down the stretch.
?We are shooting some better nine-hole scores, but haven?t found a way to put back-to-back rounds together for solid 18-hole scores,? O?Hare said. ?Then, when one or two come through with better 18-hole scores, someone else falters. We have yet to get four solid scores put together on the same day.?
Coming?Hillsboro was scheduled to compete Tuesday at the Central Kansas League golf tournament hosted by Nicker?son.
The Trojans will head down the road to Marion Monday for the Class 3A regional tournament.
Joining the Trojans and Warriors in the hunt for state berths will be Burlington, Council Grove, Southeast of Saline, Minneapolis, Osage City, West Franklin and Central Heights.
