The Hillsboro boys placed second in an eight-team field at the Berean Invitational cross-country meet Thursday at Harvey County Park East.
Mulvane, one of the top-ranked teams in the state, claimed the team title with a combined time of 81 minutes, 53.2 seconds. Hillsboro was next at 88:14.9, then Berean Academy (89:14.6), Andover Central (90:38.0), Hesston (92:21.4), Remington (94:41.3) and Goessel 95:06.9.
Nicholas Mueller turned in the fourth-fastest time at 16:57 and Nathan Vogel was ninth overall in 17.24.
No other individual results were available at press time for the HHS boys or girls.
Lyons?Hillsboro entered the Lyons cross-country meet on Tuesday, Sept. 30, to replace the meet at Wamego that was washed out Sept. 13.
Hillsboro boys placed fifth among nine schools with 93 points. Wichita Trinity won the meet with 68 points, Southeast of Saline was second with 80, Ellsworth third with 89 and Sterling fourth with 91.
Nicholas Mueller led the Trojans with a third-place finish in 18 minutes, 5 seconds. He was followed by Nathan Vogel (seventh, 18:24), Robbie McClelland (20th, 19:03), Jonathan King (29th, 19:31), David Ratzloff (34th, 19:40), Brandon McMillen (39th, 20:13).
For the girls, Jessica Elliott placed 24th in 18:46, followed by Heidi Schroeder (35th, 19:44) and Clara Ens (39th, 19:48).
?Overall it was a good day for the kids,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?Jessica Elliott medaled for the first time this year, and Nicholas Mueller and Nathan Vogel continued their stellar seasons with the highest individual places of their career.
?Team-wise, the boys didn?t quite hit on all cylinders like we did last week, and consequently three teams that we beat last week edged us out this week,? Holmes added. ?I know the guys will look forward to competing against all those teams again this year.?
In the boys? junior-varsity race, Cody Blackketter placed second (20:43), followed by Michael Christian (12th, 22:32.27), Jordan Riggs (29th, 26:06) and Scott Brandt (34th, 29:01).
Samantha Ens won the girls? JV race in 19:58.
In the freshman boys? race, Bret Mueller placed second (20:19), Max Heddin ninth, (22:54) and Zach Carey 11th (23:42).
Coming?Hillsboro is scheduled to compete at Sterling on Thursday. Races begin at 4:30 p.m.
