HHS boys finish third in CKL, Sechrist lowers 3,200 record

Gold medals won by Shaq Thiessen in the long jump and Mitchell Day in the 100 meters paced the Hillsboro boys to a third-place team finish in the Central Kansas League track and field meet Thursday in Linds?borg.

Hesston won the team title with 101 points, followed by Sterling (841?2), Hillsboro and Pratt (81), Halstead (72), Smoky Valley (701?2), Lyons 26, Nick?erson (16), Haven (14) and King?man (12).

Thiessen jumped 21 feet, 10 inches to outdistance his nearest rival by more than 4 inches. Day claimed third place with a leap of 20-2.

Day went on to win the 100 in 11.93 seconds.

Earning silver medals for Hillsboro were Jesse Brown in high jump (5-10), Tyler Proffitt in pole vault (12-6) and the 4×800 team of Josh Richert, Grant Knoll, Avery Franz and Bret Mueller (8:48.04).

Franz claimed a bronze medal in triple jump at 41-5.

For the girls, Emily Sechrist claimed the only gold medal and lowered her school record in the 3,200 by nearly 10 seconds as the Trojans placed sixth as a team. Her time was 11:37.40.

In the chase for the team title, Pratt nearly lapped the field with 1501?2 team points. The Green?backs were followed by Haven (82), Hesston (72), Sterling (64), Smoky Valley (60), Hillsboro (56), Nickerson (43), Halstead (17), Kingman (121?2) and Lyons (7).

In addition to her victory in the 3,200, Sechrist placed second in the 1,600 in 5:28. Hillsboro?s other silver medal came from Ashley Bartel in pole vault (7-6).

Claiming third-place medals were Callie Serene in the 800 (2:27.04) and Kiara Espada in the javelin (92-8).

?Our kids came to compete today,? coach Dennis Boldt said. ?We know that our league is comprised of 3A and 4A teams who bring their best athletes to track and field. I am extremely proud of their efforts as a team and look forward to our upcoming regional meet Friday.?

Coming?Trojan athletes will be looking to qualify for state at the regional meet in Marion.

Joining the Trojans and Warriors in the field are Anthony-Harper-Chaparral, Belle Plaine, Conway Springs, Douglass, Garden Plain, South?east of Saline, Halstead, Hutch Trinity, Kingman, Bluestem, Moundridge, Sedgwick, Reming?ton and Wichita Independent.

Field events begin at 3 p.m., track preliminaries at 4:30 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
