Heyen, Faber win 1 state match

The Hillsboro doubles team of Becky Faber and Emma Heyen went home with a 1-2 record for their effort at the Class 3-2-1A state tennis tournament Friday at Wichita Collegiate.

Faber and Heyen opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Padget Sutherland and Whitney Simons of Bishop Seabury Academy in Lawrence.

In the next round they lost to Abby Koester and Chelsea Edenkamp of Conway Springs, 7-5, 6-4.

Playing in the consolation bracket, the Trojan duo lost 9-3 to Collegiate?s doubles team of Natalie Farha and Keli Dunn, to finish their season with a 23-5 record.

?These girls had a fantastic run,? coach Bob Woelk said. ?It?s too bad it had to end so quickly, but that doesn?t take away from what they accomplished this year.

?We fought hard against the Conway team that I believe eventually won it all. We just had too many unforced errors against a doubles team that wasn?t going to make a lot of mistakes on the other side of the net.

?It was nice to see four seasons of work pay off for the seniors this year.?
