The Bluebirds made around 18 percent of their shots from the field (7-39) and scored 20 points at the free-throw line.
In a low-scoring first quarter, Goessel took the lead when Eden Hiebert scored a minute and a half in. The Bluebirds built to their largest margin after Page Hiebert made two free-throws and Alicen Meysing scored to make it 7-2. Waverly made a three to make it 7-5 at the first break.
The teams played evenly through the second quarter. Page Hiebert led the effort with seven points. Goessel led, 18-16, at halftime.
Things took a turn for the worse in the third quarter when Goessel went 2-for-14 from the field. Waverly scored five unanswered points and take the lead for good. The Bulldogs built their lead to 27-21 and enjoyed that same margin at the end of the period, 32-26.
Goessel?s offensive struggles continued, as the Bluebirds were 0-for-8 from the field in the fourth quarter, but were a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Waverly attempted just three shots in the fourth quarter?making two of them?and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 1:30 to seal the nine-point win.
Page Hiebert led the Bluebirds with 16 points.
The Bluebirds, who had a first-round bye, advanced to the championship with a 67-42 win over Melvern-Marais Des Cygnes Valley Tuesday.
Goessel concludes the season with an overall record of 19-3.
