Goessel Cross Country finishes seventh at state

The Goessel Cross Country boys team finished in seventh place at the State Cross Country Meet at Wamego last weekend. Karrie Rathbone/Special to the Free PressGoessel High School performed well at the state cross country meet on Saturday.

The boys team finished 7th overall with 147 points. The third place team had 136 points making it a very tight competition between 3rd and 7th.

“The boys race started out very fast, and I was proud of how the guys controlled their pace and worked their way through the pack as the race progressed. This was the first time any one of the runners competed at Wamego and a fast start on the hills can cause the latter part of the race to be very slow.”

Goessel also took a female to state. Elsie Clark finished in 25th and worked hard to improve her position throughout the race. After a 1/4 mile she was around 55th place and slowly moved up to finish in the top thirty.

“This is the fourth year for high school girls in Kansas to run a 5K and Elsie’s time was the fastest for a Goessel female student at the state meet for that distance. I hope all these kids have another opportunity to be at the state meet and that the experience gained this year will provide the confidence to start faster in future years,” said Coach Lightner. “I was very proud of not only those who were running, but also having the majority of the remaining team come to Wamego and support the runners! It was a fun day begin together one final time at a meet. Thank you to seniors Edel and Nate for their leadership and contribution this season.”

All of the team members will be recognized on Friday, Nov. 16 at their fall awards night.
