The Goessel High School basketball teams trounced Elyria on the opening night of the Bluebird Classic Tuesday. The GHS boys won 57-23 and the girls won 45-16.
The girls steamrolled Veritas Christian 64-10 Friday, and the boys passed their test 61-48, setting up a pair of first place games for the Bluebirds against Burrton Saturday.
The boys took the title, 55-41.
Niko Herman scored five points in the first quarter of the boys game, and paced GHS to a 10-7 lead. The Bluebirds led 21-13 at halftime.
Goessel turned it into a rout in the third quarter, outscoring Burrton 23-2 in the frame.
GHS posted an 11-6 run closing the fourth quarter.
Burrton won the girls title game 25-21. With the score knotted at 13-13 through two quarters and at 15-15 through three, Burrton scored three field goals to take the lead and used a 6-for-12 free throw shooting performance to end the contest.
Kendra Flaming led the way with 7 points, and Karis Janzen scored 6?but Wallsten?s 10 for Burrton was decisive.
The tournament concludes Goessel?s December schedule. GHS hosts Trinity Jan. 6.
