Goessel boys cross country headed to state

The Goessel boys cross country team is heading to state the first time since 2015 after placing second in the regional meet held at Belleville Country Club.

The girls placed fourth with 92 points, just seven points out of third place, twelve points from second and also two points ahead of fifth place. Although they did not qualify as a team, Elsie Clark qualified as an individual runner by placing in the top ten.

The morning off with very strong performances by all the girls.

“We knew they would have to run season bests in order to have a chance to qualify and nearly all of them did. This concludes the team part of the season for the girls as we focus now on preparing Elsie for her first state experience,” said Coach Brian Lightner.

The boys struggled initially as some started off too fast and others weren’t feeling well, but they pulled through and secured their second place slot.

“The boys team was not as smooth as we would have like but they all run very gutsy, tough races,” said Lightner. “This is a great ‘team’ as we do not have a dominant lead runner so it was important that when someone is struggling, other kids step up. With about 800 meters to go, Chicco and Timothy were behind a small pack of team scoring runners and they were able to surpass the whole group by the end of the race.”

The state meet is at Wamego Country Club next Saturday, Oct. 27. The 2A boys will run at 10 a.m. and Clark will run in the 2A girls race at 11:45 a.m.
