The Centre volleyball team will be under new leadership this season as Susan Saunders steps in as head coach.

Centre returns five players with starting experience on its 12-girl roster. That list is highlighted by a pair of first team, all-league selections from a year ago: Summer Espinosa, an outside hitter and setter; and Shelby Pankratz, a setter and hitter. Both are seniors. Senior setter and hitter Katie Marler also returns.

Two juniors complete Centre’s list of returning starters: middle hitter Kate Basore and outside hitter Emily Schlesener.

Centre’s roster also features senior Alexius Kendrick; juniors Haizea Diego and Grace Peterson; sophomores Grace Knepp, Kayla Gosnell and Athena Salamone; and freshman Emma David.

A year ago, Centre went 5-2 in Wheat State League play and finished the season 10-15. The Cougars will play without graduated senior Whitney Gutsch as they look to improve upon last season’s successes.

The Cougars were scheduled to open the season at Canton-Galva Tuesday, who, along with Herington, are new additions to the Wheat State League this year. Centre will travel to Little River Tuesday.
