The Eagles went 4-5 in Heart of America league a year ago, and 20-15 overall.

This year, Canton-Galva will compete in Class 2A as members of the Wheat State League. Member schools in addition to Canton-Galva include Centre, Elyria Christian, Goessel, Herington, Little River, Peabody-Burns, Rural Vista (Hope and White City), Solomon and Wakefield.

Second-year coach Kaitlyn Bressie will rely on her returning starters to anchor the team. That includes four seniors: outside hitter Autumn Colgin, middle hitter Emily Ballantyne, setter Kelli Nightingale and outside hitter Brittany Nordstrom. Junior libero Ashley Nightingale completes the Eagles’ returning starters.

Junior back-row specialist Alex Koehn also returns as a letter-winner.

The Eagles will need to replace three seniors, including All-HOA first-team recipient Cassidy Enns, All-HOA honorable-mention honoree Zoe Unruh and Sierah Nordstrom.

The Eagles’ 26-person roster will be dominated by younger athletes, Bressie said.

“Girls are going to have to step into different roles this season, and I’m excited for the outcome once we get it all put together,” she said. “We will be participating in a new league, and we are excited for the opportunities that holds for us. I expect our talented and experienced upperclassmen to lead us to a successful season.”

The Eagles were scheduled to host a triangular Aug. 30 to start the season. CGHS will host a triangular with Herington and Solomon Sept. 6. Varsity action is to begin at 6:10 p.m.
