Becky Faber led the Hillsboro tennis team with a third-place finish in No. 1 singles Tuesday at Hesston.
Faber defeated Kelsey Sanborn of Abilene 8-2, lost to Janel Prather of Sterling 8-4, then beat Bridget Winter of Buhler 8-5.
?Obviously, Becky continues to play well at No. 1 singles,? coach Bob Woelk said. ?She and Winter were in an epic battle.?
In No. 2 singles, Emma Heyen won the consolation bracket for fifth place. She lost to Samantha Murphy 8-7 in a tiebreaker, then defeated Taylor Major-Dane of Buhler 8-4, and Cameron Har?grave of Trinity Academy 8-3.
?Emma is looking like she will be my second singles player down the stretch for league and regionals, though that could change,? Woelk said.
In No. 1 doubles, Courtney Weber and Elise Heyen also claimed fifth by winning the consolation bracket.
The pair lost to Christner and Feldt of Abilene 8-5 in the opening round, then defeated Buckman and Brashear of Sterling 8-1 and Dieckoff and Zimmerman of Trinity Academy 8-6.
In No. 2 doubles, Aubrey Meier and Hayley Pankratz went 1-2. They lost to West and Matticks of Trinity Academy 8-4, defeated Anderson and Dukart of Buhler 8-6, then lost to Stout and Eash of Haven 8-6.
?These two doubles pairs will likely stay together for the stretch run, though I plan to mix everything up for Tuesday?s meet at Collegiate in Wichita,? Woelk said.
Coming?That meet at Collegiate was scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Wichita. This Thursday, the Trojans host their second tournament of the season, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The team then has a few days off before the league tournament in Wichita Oct. 3.
