Faber fifth in singles in Hesston

The Hillsboro tennis team competed Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Hesston.

Sophomore Becky Faber led the effort by winning the consolation bracket, placing fifth overall with a 3-1 record. Faber beat Danica Good of Hesston 8-2, lost to Janel Prather of Sterling 1-8, then beat Chelsea Ellis of Sacred Heart 8-3 and Danica Good of Hesston again 8-1.

Kelsey Bartel lost to Asheley Allman of McPherson 5-8, Morgan Schrock of Hesston 3-8, and defeated Ruby Miller of Haven 8-0 in No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Heyen and Aubrey Meier lost to Franz and Bognaes of Hesston 3-8, Richenberger and Eash of Haven 7-8 (3-7) and McCullers and Britton of Sterling 1-8.

The No. 2 doubles of Hayley Pankratz and Elise Heyen lost to Mackenzie and Eash of Haven 3-8, Gengler and Kampfe of Smoky Valley 2-8, and Buckman and Tague of Sterling 3-8.

?Overall, again, I think we made a good showing, despite the collective records,? coach Bob Woelk said. ?Becky is really starting to come into her own as a singles player.

?Many of our games are close,? he added. ?In one match, the No. 2 doubles team went to deuce in eight out of 10 games in the match. We just need to learn how to win key points.

Coming? The Trojans were schedule to compete at Wichita Collegiate on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and will host their own invitational Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Sports Complex.
