Eleven Warriors recognized with HOA baseball honors

Eleven members of Marion’s Class 3A third-place state baseball team have received recognition from Heart of America league coaches.

Six of the 13 first-team honorees represent Marion.

Junior pitcher Chase Stringer led the team in wins, going 7-1 on the mound with an ERA of 2.85 over 46.2 innings pitched. He threw two shutouts and one no-nitter. He gave up 32 hits and 19 earned runs, walking 34 batters and striking out a team-best 49 hitters.

Junior first baseman Evann Heidebrecht batted .373 in 26 games (28-for-75), including four doubles and three triples. He drove in 26 runs.

Junior third baseman Sam Zinn batted .439 in 26 games (36-for-82), including four doubles and one triple. He had 20 RBIs.

Senior shortstop Corbin Wheeler batted a team-best .466 over 26 games (34-for-73), hitting 12 doubles and five triples. He had 33 RBIs. In his career at Marion, he batted .341 (88-for-258).

Senior outfielder Cole Srajer batted .410 in 26 games (34-for-83), including five doubles, eight triples and one home run. He drove in 24 runs. In his career, he batted .353 (103-for-292).

Sophomore designated hitter Luke Lanning batted .438 over 26 games (35-for-80), hitting three doubles and one triple. He had a team-high 35 RBIs.

Two Warriors were named to the second team.

Sophomore pitcher Jaxton Tracy went 6-1 on the mound with an ERA of 2.60 over 29.2 innings pitched. He gave up 24 hits and 11 earned runs, walking 22 batters and striking out 37.

Sophomore second baseman Cooper Carpenter batted .339 in 22 games (20-for-59), including four doubles. He had 17 RBIs.

Three Warriors received honorable mention.

Junior pitcher Blaine Mermis went 3-0 on the mound with an ERA of 3.88 over 21.2 innings. He surrendered 14 hits and 12 earned runs, walking 23 batters and striking out 22.

Senior catcher Garrett Hoffner batted .299 over 26 games (20-for-67), including three doubles and two triples. He drove in 26 runs. Over his career, he batted .276 (42-for-152).

Senior utility Jacob Vondenkamp batted .303 over 26 games (23-for-76), including eight doubles. He drove in 18 runs. Over his career, he batted .317 (60-for-189).

As a team in 2018, the 23-3 Warriors batted .361 and recorded an ERA of 2.97.
