Edwards throws second no-hitter

Hillsboro left-hander Jacob Edwards tossed his second no-hitter of the season to propel the Trojans to a 5-1 win in the opening game against Haven last Tuesday at Memorial Field.

Dylan Delk and Ben Gardner combined for a two-hitter in Game 2 to fuel a 7-1 win and a sweep in the last regular-season games of the season. The Trojans finished their schedule with a 13-7 mark.

Edwards, who pitched an 11-strikeout no-hitter against Marion on April 9, was magnificent against Haven, topping his previous gem with 18 strikeouts. He struck out at least two batters in every inning.

The senior lost his shutout, though, in the third inning when the Wildcats squeezed a run across with the help of two walks and two Trojan errors.

In fact, Hillsboro trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning. Aaron Bina struck out to start the Trojan at-bat, but reached base after the ball got past the catcher. Tyler Ediger promptly drove him home with a double and eventually scored on a single by Derek Kelsey.

Dylan Delk, who had walked prior to Kelsey?s at-bat, scored on a sacrifice fly by Luke Moore to put the Trojans in front for good at 3-1.

Hillsboro added two more runs in the sixth. Ben Gardner tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Delk. Kelsey then singled, stole second and scored on a single by Moore.

In Game 2, Hillsboro jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with Bina, Ediger and Delk stroking run-scoring singles.

That would be all the run support Delk would need on the mound. He pitched four shutout innings before he was touched for a run in the fifth on a double and sacrifice fly.

Delk threw six innings, striking out three and walking two to earn the win. Gardner pitched a perfect seventh inning to nail it down.

Bina went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Trojans? six-hit attack. Hillsboro benefitted from six walks and five Haven errors.
