Duo set to represent GHS at state 8-man all-star game

Goessel grads Grady Stultz (left) and Kurtis Duerksen will play Saturday for the West team at the 23rd annual Kansas 8-man All-Star Game in Beloit.

Two Goessel High School athletes have been selected to play on the West squad at the 23rd annual Kansas 8-Man All-Star Football Game.

Kickoff for the Division I game will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Trojan Field on North Hersey Avenue in Beloit.

Grady Stultz and Kurtis Duerksen, 2008 graduates from GHS, both made key contributions to the success of the Bluebird program over the past four years.

Stultz was selected to the Heart of America all-league first team defense and team leader defense in 2006; all league offensive line and defensive line in 2007. He had 23 solos tackles and 56 assists with two sacks and one blocked punt.

Duerksen was selected to the 8-man Division I District 5 team as a defensive lineman. During his career he recovered six fumbles, caused three, deflected two passes, amassed 5,280 yards in kickoff returns, and was credited with 148 tackles and 97 assists, 26 sacks, 40 tackles for loss, 42 quarterback hurries and scored a defensive touchdown.

Goessel was the Heart of America League champions all four years of the athletes? careers and was the first class at Goessel to have a winning season all four seasons.

In 2005, Goessel was regional runner up, and was bi-district runner-up in 2006 and 2007.

Stultz, son of Harold and Jennifer Stultz, plans to play football at Bethel College and major in engineering and aviation.

Duerksen, son of Russell and Sandra Duerksen, plans to attend Southeast Community College in Milford, Neb., to be a John Deere agricultural technician.
