Diener leads HHS at CKL meet

Hillsboro cross-country boys placed seventh as a team at the Central Kansas League race Thurs­day at Pratt.

Freshman Caleb Diener led the Trojans with a time of 18 minutes, 53 seconds over 5 kilometers to finish 17th in a field of 64 runners.

He was followed by fellow freshman Tristan Reed (22nd, 19:14), junior Caleb Rempel (44th, 20:58), junior Tucker Moss (56th, 22:32), sophomore Jason Latham (61st, 23:23) and junior Orin Blecha (63rd, 29:41).

Smoky Valley won the team title with 49 points, followed by Halstead (55), Pratt (94), Kingman (122), Larned (132), Hesston (147), Hills­boro (195), Lyons (216), Hoi­sington (219) and Haven (227).

For the Trojan girls, freshman Iris Klein set the pace by finishing 10th in a field of 40 runners in 23:23. Following her were junior Abby Driggers (25th, 26:39), Maddie Suderman (33rd, 28:23) and Millie Sechrist (34th, 28:29).

Hillsboro didn’t have the five runners needed to post a team score. Larned won the team title with 39 points, followed by Smoky Valley (42), Halstead (60) and Hoisington (75).

“We represented Hills­boro with courage and toughness at our league meet in Pratt,” coach Robert Haude said. “We had some outstanding performances. Iris Klein posted a very respectable time in 10th place. Our top boy finisher was Caleb Diener, who ran a great race on a difficult course.”

Coming—The Trojans will make the long trek to Meade on Saturday to compete in the Class 2A regional at the Meade Golf Course.

The girls wil run at 11 a.m. and the boys at noon.

In addition to the Trojans and the host school, the field includes Canton-Galva, Berean Academy, Elkhart, Goessel, Kiowa County, Inman, Stanton County, Macksville, Marion, Meade, Skyline, Sublette and Udall.
