Centre girls earn trip to 1A-DI state tournament

The Centre girls earned a berth in the Class 1A-Division I state tournament Thursday with a 35-32 win over Fairfield in the finals of the sub-state tournament at Goessel last Saturday.

Centre led, 8-7, after one quarter, but trailed, 18-17, at the half. The Cougars were down, 28-26, after three quarters, but outscored Fairfield, 9-4, in the final frame.

Shelby Makovec scored five points in the decisive quarter. Beka Basore led Centre with 12 points as the Cougars moved on with a 14-9 season record.

The Cougars earned a spot in the finals by defeating White City (9-13) Friday, 52-40.

Cacey Simons led the charge with 18 points, going 11-12 at the line.

Centre had a bye for the first round Feb. 28.

As the eighth seed at state, Centre (14-9) will take on No. 1 Hoxie (21-1) at 3 p.m. Thursday in White Auditorium on the campus of Emporia State University.

If the Cougars win, they would play the victor between No. 4 Spearville (19-3) and No. 5 Pike Valley of Scandia (18-5) in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday.

The championship game begins at 4 p.m. Saturday and the third-place game at noon.

The first-round games on the other side of the bracket include No. 2 Waverly (21-2) vs. No. 7 Centralia (15-9) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and No. 3 St. John-Hudson (21-2) will play No. 6 Caldwell (17-7) at 8:15 p.m.
