Led by the core of returning starters Leann Pankratz, Carlye Simons and Shelby Deines, the Centre High School girls? basketball team will look to build on the successes of last year?s 7-14 season.
The Cougars, entering their third year under coach Kelly Steiner, ended last season with a loss to Hope in the regionals round.
Steiner, 24-19 at CHS, has three letter-winners returning to the court for 2008-09: junior guards Josie Peterson and Sammi Seifert, and sophomore forward Allison Shields.
Deines, a 5-foot-7 junior, averaged 10.5 points per game and is the leading scorer among the returning players.
Simons, a 5-4 junior, averaged eight points per game and Pankratz averaged six. Pankratz is the team?s only senior.
Steiner will also look to develop the skills of an interesting group of underclassmen: sophomores Ripley Howard, Amanda Floyd, D.J. Turner, Tori Schill and Katy Remy, and freshman Theo Kassebaum.
Without an imposing post player, the Cougars will play a guard-oriented style with a focus on dictating the tempo of games.
Centre?s season begins Dec. 5 at Southeast of Saline.
