It was a tough opening day for area schools? basketball teams?except for the Canton Galva ad Goessel girls. The Eagles were the only area team in action to pick up a win Friday, beating visiting Elyria Christian, 41-35. CGHS?got a balanced attack led by Erika Smith with nine points. Darci Ennis scored eight, Makenzie Farnham contributed seven and Leah Schmitz finished with five points. The Eagle boys opened their season with a 60-40 loss to Elyria Christian. Jowdan Case led Elyria with 18 points. Aaron Potter had 12. Nick Vogts was the top scorer for CGHS?with nine points. Tad Wedel booked seven. Both Eagle teams will partipate in the Bluebird Classic in Goessel Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Goessel?The girls? Bluebird basketball team is 1-0 after defeating visiting former Heart of America League foe Inman 42-23. Alex Hiebert led Goessel with 14 points. Shanna Klassen had 11. The Goessel boys fell 65-39 to Inman behind a 26 point performance from Luke Ropp. Davis Cook led the Bluebirds with 13 points. Nic Buller had 10. Goessel hosts the Bluebird Calssic Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Centre?Coming off a season in which it finished as the final Dwight D. Eisenhower League regular-season atounament champions, the Centre basketball team dropped its opener at Southeast of Saline 45-32. Nathan Peterson led the SES Trojans with 14 points. Jordan Wyatt had 11 points. Tanner Brunner led the Cougars with 12 points, 11 rebounds. Brian Burhoop had 10 points, six rebounds. The Centre girls also fell to SES 54-28. Centre will play in the Herington Preseason Tourna?ment Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Peabody-Burn?The Warriors basketball teams started thier seasons with a pair of losses to Chase County. The boys fell 45-24. The girls lost 27-24. Aaron Johnson led the boys? Bulldogs with 15 points. Garrett Osgood had nine. PBHS?travels to the Marion Classic, playing Marion Tuesday.
