Goessel?The Bluebirds qualified Saturday for the Class 1A-Division I state tournament by winning the sub-state tournament hosted by Centre.

Goessel, the No. 1 seed, earned a bye in the first round, then defeated Burrton, 25-18, 25-16, and Centre, 25-16, 25-16, to claim the title.

The Bluebirds, now 29-10 for the season, will be the No. 6 seed at state. They will open pool play Friday at 9:30 a.m. against No. 3 Centralia (33-8), then will play No. 2 Spearville (34-4) at 10:30 and No. 7 Pike Valley (27-10) at 12:30 p.m.

The top two teams from the pool will advance to the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. The tournament will be played on Grosse Coliseum on the campus of Fort Hays State.

Centre?The Cougars fell one match short of qualifying for state in a 25-16, 25-16 loss to Goessel in the championship of the Class 1A-Division I sub-state tournament.

Playing on their home court, Centre earned a bye in the first round, then advanced to the finals with a 25-15, 25-22 win over White City. The Cougars complete the season with a 19-16 record.

Canton-Galva?The Eagles went 1-1 in the Class 2A sub-state tournament Saturday at Ellinwood.

No. 8 seeded Canton-Galva defeated No. 9 seeded Medicine Lodge, in the opening match to determine who would move on to the eight-team bracket. The Eagles then lost to the eventual sub-state champions, Pratt Skyline, 25-17, 25-22, to end the season at 9-22.

Peabody-Burns?The Warriors ended a successful season Saturday with a 25-19, 25-13 loss to Lebo in the semifinals of the Class 2A sub-state tournament at Olpe.

The Warriors, who finished with a 21-13 record, defeated Yates Center, 25-18, 25-23, in the opening round.
