Cross-country—Morgan Becker paved the way for the Eagles at Hesston Thursday with a silver medal finish. Becker crossed the finish line in the Class 3-2-1A sophomore boys’ race in 18 minutes, 13 seconds, good for second place and second best among all sophomore boys in Classes 6A-1A. Southeast of Saline’s Dylan Sprecker won the 3-2-1A sophomore boys’ race in 17:30.

“Even by finishing second, I know Morgan was not real pleased with his time,” coach Lyle Silsby said. “But he has been battling a respiratory cold for a week now, and I thought he did really well for not being able to breathe right.”

Also earning a medal in the sophomore boys’ race was Christian Darrah, who finished sixth in 18:56.

Sofia Boninsegna earned Canton-Galva’s third medal. In her first official 5-k race, Boninsegna placed 16th in the senior girls’ race with a time of 24:57.

“That is a pretty good way to start a high school senior season,” Silsby said. “We are excited to see how much she can improve throughout the next seven weeks of the season.”

Completing the team were: Ethan Unruh, 38th in the freshman boys’ race (23:11); Aleah Peres, 28th in the junior girls’ race (27:52); Sarah Kendall, 40th in the junior girls’ race (35:02); and Andrew Prieb, 71st in the junior boys’ race (28:03).

“Ethan, Aleah and Andrew also all ran their first official 5-k today, as they are all newcomers to the high school team,” Silsby said. “I was pleased with all their efforts, and was surprised by a couple of the times.

“Sarah has run the past two years, and improved her time by quite a bit from this same race last season. All the kids have been working hard, and we just try to get a little faster each day.”

Volleyball—The Eagles finished third in the Goessel tournament hosted by Sedgwick Saturday.

Canton-Galva defeated Fairfield (25-11, 25-14) and Wichita Independent (25-18, 25-17), then lost to Sedgwick (25-14, 25-19) and Moundridge (25-12, 25-9) before defeating Central Christian (25-16, 18-25, 25-23) in the third-place match.

“As a team, we stayed fairly consistent throughout the day, which helped keep us in the running for third place,” coach Cloe Hedlund said. “We are very proud of the team playing as a unit today and respecting one another’s abilities.”

Canton-Galva swept Solomon Tuesday in a best of five matchup (25-18, 25-13, 25-14).

“We did a great job being consistent on our side of the court tonight and made some great improvements from last week,” coach Cloe Hedlund said. “Our serve game tonight was a struggle early on; however, we really got going with that in the last two sets and made several aces. It was great to see this team play as a unit with lots of competitive spirit tonight.”

Centre

Volleyball—The Cougars lost two matches Tuesday.

Centre lost to Goessel, 16-25, 27-25, 19-25. Emma David recorded three service aces. Samantha Espinoza led the Cougar attack with nine kills. She, and Alyssa Espinoza, had four assists each.

“The girls worked hard during each match, but we just couldn’t keep on a roll,” coach Karen Nickel said. “We would get on a run and then we stalled so the other teams were able to score, catch up or even get ahead. We worked hard and learned that we have to adjust some of our coverage areas to allow our blockers and hitters to be more effective. I am still proud of how hard my team worked in the conditions that we played in.”

Goessel

Goessel’s Jerah Schmidt earned a second-place finish in the Class 3-2-1A senior boys’ race at Hesston Thursday with a personal-best time of 18:28.5. It is the highest a Goessel runner has placed at Hesston in the last 10 years.

Cross-country—Jerah Schmidt led the Bluebirds at Hesston’s Swather Special Thursday, finishing second in the Class 3-2-1A senior boys’ race with a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 28.5 seconds.

“This was the first high school 5-k race for five of our boys, and I was so proud of how they ran,” Lightner said. “Several of them were running as fast or faster than they did last week in the two-mile race at Abilene, so their trust and confidence in themselves is beginning to grow.”

“Elyse finished with a career high seventh place with a fast start and holding on decently throughout the race,” Lightner said. “She was as high as fifth after the two-mile mark but was passed by a couple of runners in the last half mile. Porclein, Katelyn and Alyssa all ran between 10-20 seconds faster per mile compared to their Abilene time.”

We need to run against this competition to see where we need to be in our training, and a couple of things really showed up today. Our first mile by all of our runners was very good.
