Canton-Galva—Eli Janzen led the Eagles at the Marion Invita­tional Thursday, placing 20th in the varsity race in 19:33. “Eli ran another solid race, and it was good to see him pass several in the last 3/4 mile,” coach Lyle Silsby said. “He is getting physically stronger and that is helping him sustain his speed longer.” Justin Hiller took 41st in the varsity race in 21:03 and Jon Weber was eighth in the junior varsity race in 22:19. Helena Clausing and Katie Diehl took fourth and seventh in the girls’ junior varsity in 20:19 and 21:26, respectively. The Eagles are scheduled to run Thursday at Halstead. Goessel—The Bluebirds competed at the Marion Invitational Thursday. Brittny Czarnowsky set a personal record of 17:09, finishing 18th out of 53 runners. For the boys, Nathan Czarnowsky finished 25th in 19:57 in a field of 68 runners. Following him were Heath Goertzen (29th, 20:25), Ben Weins (38th, 20:53), Grant Flaming (45th, 21:14) and Dan Smucker (54th, 22:43). Jake Herrel placed fourth in the junior varsity race in 21:52, followed by Aaron Woelk (16th, 24:30), Dane Kruger (21st, 26:27) and Garrett Woelk (22nd, 26:55). Goessel competed at the Southeast of Saline Invitational Sept. 20. Brittny Czarnowski placed 31st among 67 girls in 18:23. In the boys’ 5-k race, Heath Goertzen placed 41st among 106 finishers in 20:10. He was followed by Nathan Czarnowsky (45th, 20:22), Ben Wiens (89th, 22:12), Grant Flaming (90th, 22:13), Dan Smucker (94th, 22:52), Jake Herrel (95th, 23:30) and Stephan Goertzen (100th, 23:59). In the junior varsity race, Dane Kruger placed 79th (25:47) and Garret Woelk 87th (27:47) among 96 runners. “Times this year are ahead of where they were at this time last year for all returning runners, in many cases by over a minute,” coach Derrick Birdsell said. “The new runners this year have contributed immediately, and the effort that has been shown by all runners is encouraging.” Goessel will run Thursday at the Berean Invitational at Harvey County East Lake. Peabody-Burns—The Warriors competed at the Marion Invitational Thursday. Zach Preheim finished in 20:38. Mackenzie Young took third in the junior varsity girls’ race in 20:16 and Lilly Harris was ninth in 21:58. “It was a great day for a race,” coach Kim Topham said. “This was our first introduction to hills and we handled them well.” The Warriors are scheduled to run at Halstead Thursday.
