Area Basketball Roundup (Feb. 3, 2010)

Last week was busy for area girls? basketball teams. Goessel, Peabody-Burns and Canton-Galva particpated in mid-season tournaments while Centre played two Eisenhower league games.

Berean Tournament

Peabody-Burns and Goessel traveled to Elbing to play in the Berean Academy Tournament Jan. 25-30.

Goessel finished fourth, losing to Hutchinson Central Christian 42-37 in the third-place game Saturday. The Bluebirds beat Bluestem 47-28 Tuesday then lost to tournament runner-up Douglass 43-39 Thursday.

Peabody-Burns finished fifth. On opening day, the Warriors lost to Douglass 48-19, then bounced back Thursday, edging Bluestem 50-49. In the fifth-place game, the PBHS defeated Burr?ton 40-37.

The Goessel boys? game originally scheduled for Friday at Little River was postponed because of snow. The game has been rescheduled for Feb. 15.

The Goessel girls and boys play three games again this week. The boys beat Flinthills High School 68-48 and the girls beat the Mustangs 58-18 on Monday.

The Bluebirds play Berean Tuesday, then are at home against Thursday before traveling to Inman Friday.

The Peabody-Burns boys and girls teams spend the week at home, hosting Sedgwick Tuesday and Little River Friday.

Sedgwick Tournament

The Canton-Galva girls finished fourth at the Sedgwick Tournament last week. The Eagles defeated Fairfield Tuesday, 68-36, then lost to Remington, 42-30, Thursday. In the third-place game on Saturday the Eagles lost to Inman 59-35.

The Eagle boys and girls begin a three-game home stand this week. They host Remington Tuesday, Trinity Friday and Peabody-Burns Feb. 9.

Centre High

The Centre boys and girls combined for a 4-0 record last week.

On Tuesday, Centre swept Flint Hills Christian in Manhattan. The girls, led by 10 points from Carlye Simons, won 38-15.

The Cougar boys won 61-30, paced by 17 points and five rebounds from Trevor Troutt. Jacob Jirak finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Centre celebrated homecoming Friday by beating White City in both games.

Led by 15 points from Allison Shields and 12 points from Ripley Howard, the Cougar girls won 49-31. The Centre boys beat the Huskies 54-40.

Centre was scheduled to host Solomon Tuesday, then hits the road Friday to face non-league foe Madison.
