Area athletes receive all-HOA honors

The 2013-14 Heart of America all-league basketball teams have been released, with athletes from both Marion and Canton-Galva earning all-league honors from league coaches.

Five Warriors and four Eagles have received recognition.

For the 13-9 Marion boys, seniors Zach Robson and Taylor Heidebrecht were named to the first team.

Robson was Marion?s leading scorer with 262 points, or more than 24 percent of the Warriors? scoring. He averaged 11.9 points over 22 games and shot 43 percent from the field (97-223), including 36 percent from three (25-70). He made 44 of 58 free throws (76 percent).

Robson also led Marion in rebounds (102) and assists (71). He contributed 35 steals.

Heidebrecht scored 185 points, or 8.4 per game. He shot 36 percent from the field (57-159), including 25 percent from three (14-57). He made 57 of 73 free throws (78 percent). Heidebrecht led Marion in steals with 43. He contributed 70 assists and 35 rebounds.

Senior Timothy Knolla received honorable mention. He scored 212 points for an average of 9.6. He shot 39 percent from the field (67-170), including 38 percent from three (32-84). He made 45 of 72 free throws (63 percent). He had 88 rebounds, 31 assists and 32 steals.

Marion ended its season with a sub-state semifinal loss to eventual Class 3A state champion Hesston.

For the 6-15 Eagle boys, junior Tanner Klingensmith received honorable mention.

The Eagles ended their season with a loss in the sub-state quarterfinals.

Two members of the 9-12 Marion girls? team received all-league recognition. Kelli Hess and Katey Ehrlich both earned honorable mention honors.

Ehrlich, a senior, led the Warriors in scoring with 204 points to account for more than 25 percent of production total. She averaged 9.71 points over 21 games.

Ehrlich shot 40.3 percent from the field (79-196), including 17 percent from three (5-30). She made 41 of 59 free throws (69 percent). Ehrlich added 101 rebounds, 25 assists and 31 steals.

Hess, also a senior, scored 195 points to average 9.29 per game. She shot 30.4 percent from the field (65-214), including 21 percent from three (13-62). She made 52-86 free throws (60 percent). She contributed 51 rebounds, 33 assists and 29 steals.

Marion ended its season with a loss in the sub-state quarterfinals.

Three members of the 6-16 Eagle girls? team have earned all-league honors.

Sophomore Cassidy Enns was named to the first team. Senior Erika Smith and junior Keana Haydon earned honorable mention.

The Eagles ended their season with a loss in the sub-state quarterfinals.
