Allen wins CKL

Led by Joel Allen?s fourth individual victory of the season, the Hillsboro cross-county boys finished third at the first Central Kansas League meet last Thursday at Sterling.

Sterling won the team title with 57 points, followed by Hesston (71), Hillsboro (84), Smoky Valley (123), Pratt (125), Lyons (137), Halstead (147) and Haven (157).

Allen, who won by a margin of 37 seconds, completed the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 46 seconds. Also earning medals for HHS were Brett Mueller (ninth, 18:13) and Justin King (10th, 18:17).

?These three guys have run consistently well all year,? coach Stuart Holmes said.

Avery Franz (31st, 19:49), Clay Etheridge (35th, 20:15), Josh Richert (44th, 20:49) and Daniel Gray (53rd, 21:21) rounded out the Trojan lineup in the field of 56 runners.

The Trojans, currently ranked fifth in Class 3A, might well have won the team title if Richert had been fully recovered from a two-week illness.

?He is getting better and we look forward to having him keep up there with Bret and Justin again,? Holmes said.

In the girls? varsity race, Samantha Ens placed 25th among 39 runners, completing the 4-k course in 20:09. Erin Wiebe placed 29th in 20:38. The winning time was 15:54.

Running among the 52 boys in the junior-varsity race were Tyler Funk (33rd, 24:16), Diego Castillo (39th, 24:54) and Nodari Lomidze (52nd, 30:38).

Coming?Hillsboro will aim for a team berth in the state meet later this month when the boys compete Saturday at the regional meet in Wichita.

Joining Hillsboro will be Chaparral, Belle Plaine, Council Grove, Douglass, Southeast of Saline, Halstead, Hutchinson Trinity, Bluestem, Marion, Sedgwick, Remington, Wichita Collegiate and No. 1 ranked Wichita Independent.

The girls? race will begin at 2 p.m. at the Cessna Activity Center and the boys will race at 2:30 p.m. The top three teams in each division advance to state.
