12 Marion track athletes to state

Seven Marion boys and five girls qualified for the state track and field meet following their performances Friday at the Class 3A regional meet on their home track.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the state track and field meet Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

As a team, the Warrior boys earned 67 points to tie with Southeast of Saline for second place among 15 teams. Salina-Sacred Heart won the meet with 132 points.

The Marion boys earned two gold medals at the regional meet. James Jones won the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 61⁄2 inches, and Kyle Palic won the javelin with a throw of 165-2.

Finishing second were Jordan Hett in the 3,200 (10 minutes, 23.29 seconds), Seth Snelling in the pole vault (11-6) and Jones in the long jump (21-51⁄2).

Third-place qualifiers were the 4×400 team of Patrick McCarty, Tyler Neufeld, Brody Carroll and Jones (3:31.88); the 4×800 team of Neufeld, Carroll, McCarty and Hett (8:40.04); and Kyle Palic in the discus (148-3).

The Warriors just missed qualifying for state in two events because of fifth-place finishes. Jones missed out in the 200 by 0.34 seconds (23.58), while the boys’ 4×100 team recorded a time of 46.67, 0.83 seconds behind fourth.

The Warrior girls, meanwhile, placed sixth among 14 teams with 52 points. Garden Plain won the meet with 1161⁄2 points.

Two Warriors claimed gold at regionals: Marshelle Mermis in the 400 (1:00.43), and Alicia Maloney in pole vault (9-6).

Three events placed second: Mermis in the 200 (27.53), the 4×400 team of Katey Ehrlich, Kirsten Hansen, Kelli Hess and Mermis (4:11.33), and Hansen in the pole vault (9 feet even).

Ehrlich finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.00) to qualify.

Two Warrior events just missed qualifying: Emily Schneider in the 100 by 0.04 seconds, coming in at 13.46, and the 4×100 team was 0.12 seconds from qualifying at 52.16.

Coming—Classes 1A, 2A and 3A will open competition at the state meet Friday. Seth Snelling will be the first Warrior to compete when pole vault begins at 8 a.m.

Jordan Hett will run his 3,200 following the girls’ race that begins at 8:25 a.m. James Jones will compete in the long jump at 9:45 a.m., and Kyle Palic will throw the discus also at 9:45 a.m.

Marshelle Mermis will run the 400 at 10:25 a.m. and Katey Ehrlich will run the 300 hurdles at 11:10 a.m.

Mermis will run the 200 at 12:05 p.m., and the girls’ 4×400 relay will compete at 12:45 p.m.

The boys will run the 4×400 at 1:15 p.m., and Jones will compete in triple jump also at 1:15 p.m.

Saturday, Alicia Maloney and Kirsten Hansen will pole vault at 11:30 a.m., while Kyle Palic throws the javelin, also at 11:30 a.m.
