Thiessen claims golf championship title

Anthony Thiessen overcame a one-stroke deficit on the final hole of the two-day Hillsboro Club Championship to beat his brother, Phillip, by a single stroke and claim this year?s title at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course Aug. 11.

With the two brothers well ahead of the field during Sunday?s final round, an errant shot by Phillip Thiessen on the 18th led to a double-bogey 5 on the Par 3 hole. Anthony Thiessen finished with a par to post the win with a 67 for the day and an overall score of 137, which is 3 under par for the tournament.

Phillip Thiessen, who was 2 under par for the weekend, enjoyed a two-stroke lead after Satur?day?s first round, finishing with a 68 to Anthony Thiessen?s 70.

The next closest finishers in the field were Doug Dick, Brock Nieman and Devin Dick; each carded a 152, or 12 over par.

Meanwhile, Devin Dick finished first in handicap scoring with an adjusted total of 134.4 for the tournament; Joe Jen?nings came in second at 136.4 after shooting a scratch score of 158.

Gary Andrews, course manager, said golfers faced the challenge of a soggy course, thanks to recent rains.

?Lots of tired men at the end of Sunday,? he said. ?We painted cart paths around the course and everybody followed them, which meant a lot of walking.?
