Running club certifies two Hillsboro courses

The Hillsboro Running Club has certified the distance on the two courses used for club-sponsored races: the Frostbite Four Mile on New Year?s Day and the Triple Digit 5K in August.

Clark Ensz, a course certifier from Wichita, spent several hours in Hillsboro July 2 to measure each course. He also marked the start and finish lines for each course, as well as the kilometer and mile points along the route.

Ensz said he was impressed with the accuracy of the unofficial 5K course measurement.

?It isn?t unusual for a course to be off by as many as 100 yards, but the Hillsboro course was within a few feet of its stated distance,? Ensz said. ?The person who set this course did a fine job of measuring.?

A certified course allows competitive runners to accurately compare their times with performances run on other certified courses. Also, some competitive races require runners to meet a qualifying time in order to be entered in the race.

The Hillsboro Running Club will sponsor its Triple Digit 5K on Saturday, Aug. 22. For more information about the race contact Hillsboro Recreation at 620-947-3490.
