Playoff birdie propels Kent to local golf title

Justin Kent birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim the Hillsboro Golf Associ?a?tion Men?s Club Championship this weekend at the municipal course.

Kent and Anthony Thiessen were tied at 141 after 36 holes, forcing the playoff.

Kent had shot a two-under-par 68 on Saturday to lead the field of 45 golfers. Thiessen was in a three-way tie for second at 71. On Sunday, Thiessen shot the best score of the day with a 70, while Kent carded a 73.

Meanwhile, Clint Seibel won the first flight with a 154, Harold Schultz won the second flight at 166 and Mark King claimed the third-flight title at 173.

Doug Dick, event organizer, said to give competitors extra incentive to stick it out through two days of triple-digit temperatures, the top 16 finishers over age 25 would qualify for Hills?boro?s Challenge Cup team in the annual matchup with Marion later this season.
