Hillsboro Wrestling Club members Camden Padgett and Connor Padgett, sixth-graders from Hillsboro, participated in the Kansas Elementary State Tournament Sunday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.
This event is separate from the kids state tournament in Topeka at the end of March. KEST is open to all wrestlers in Kansas in first through sixth grade. They do not run in separate age divisions, but rather simply grouped by weight.
The tournament serves as a qualifier for the Elementary National Duals later this spring. Both boys qualified for Team Kansas by finishing in the top four in their respective brackets.
Camden finished as the 85-pound runner-up out of 27 entries in his bracket. Camden’s only loss was a 4-2 decision in the finals to Troy Allen, a kids state champion from Derby.
Connor placed fourth with 13 wrestlers competing in his bracket. He lost a close 2-1 decision to Nathan Fury from Wichita in the semifinals and suffered a 2-0 overtime loss to Tyler Elvin from Bonnor Springs in the consolation finals.
