Local youth wins wrestling events at Topeka July 9

Devin Gomez, Hillsboro Elementary School student and member of the Hillsboro Wrestling Club, won his bracket in two tournaments at the Sunflower State Games in Topeka July 9.

Gomez competed in the Takedown Tournament on Saturday morning, and won all three matches in his bracket. He then competed that afternoon in the Folkstyle Tournament, also winning all three matches.

In both tournaments, Gomez competed in the 9-and-10-year-old age division and in the 72- to 75-pound weight class. During the kids wrestling season, he competed in the 8-and-under age division.

Devin was coached by his father and active Hillsboro Wrestling Club coach Sergio Gomez.

The success at Topeka complements Gomez?s third-place finish at the Kansas Kids State Championship Wrestling Tournament in March.
