Kids wrestling club competes in qualifier

Six members of the Hillsboro Wrestling Club competed in the District III state qualifying tournament Saturday in McPherson.

The six qualified for this by placing in the top four in their bracket at a sub-district tournament the previous Saturday, according to Scott O?Hare, HMC director.

The HWC had two additional wrestlers compete in a 6-&-under district championship tournament at the same time.

Tristan Rathbone placed first in the 55-pound weight class and Garrett Helmer finished second in the 52-pound weight class in the 6-&-under District III Cham?pionship Tournament, which was the final tournament for the 6-&-under division for the season.

Also at McPherson, Levi Buckridge placed third in the 8-&-under 46-pound division and Devin Gomez was the champion in the 8-&-under 70-pound division in the District III qualifying tournament.

?With their top-four finishes, these two wrestlers have qualified to represent the Hillsboro Wrestling Club in the Kansas Kids State Championship Wrestling Tournament to take place next Saturday and Sunday at the Topeka Expocenter,? O?Hare said.

The Kansas Kids State Tournament consists of the top four finishers in every bracket in each of the four districts in the state. With almost 100 total weight classes combined in the 8, 10, 12 and 14-&-under age divisions, along with a high school age division, the state tournament will host nearly 1,600 wrestlers from all over the state, competing on 14 mats over the two days.

The top six placers in each bracket will earn a plaque.
