Jorge Hanschu, a fifth-grader at Hillsboro Elementary this past year, displays the blue ribbon and medal he won in the 11-12-year-old division in softball throw at the Hershey State Track Meet in Hutchinson this weekend. His throw of 170 feet, 1 inch easily outdistanced the second place toss of 153-8. Jorge’s other two throws measured 161-5 and 157-8. The top three finishes at local Hershey meets qualify for state competition. Jorge won the softball throw at Hillsboro in May with a local record distance of 159 feet. At state, he competed against 25 other qualifiers. Jorge, son of Jayson and Jan Hanschu, is now waiting for word from Hershey officials whether he qualified for a trip to the national meet in Hershey, Pa., Aug. 2-5. First-place winners at the Kansas meet will have their results compared with first-place winners from Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
