GHS track has 11 state qualifiers back from 2009

With 11 Class 1A state qualifiers returning, the Goessel track team is hoping for a repeat of 2009, in which the boys? team finished second and four girls qualified as individuals.

Bumped to Class 2A this season, the Bluebirds return three of four members of their defending state-champion 4×100 relay team and two members of the defending state-champion 4×400 team.

Members of both teams, seniors John Berkholz and Weston Hiebert, qualified for state in several events. Hiebert also participated in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Berkholz also qualified for the open 400.

Cameron Stultz, a member of the 4×100 team, also ran in the 100 and 200.

Rounding out the boys? state qualifiers are Jared Reimer and Derek Kruger (4×800), Evan Hiebert (high jump) and Laird Goertzen (3,200 meters).

Three of the four members return from the girls? third-place 4×800 team. Seniors Karina Harvey and Aspen Frey, along with junior Kendra Flaming contributed to the 10:10.98 finish, which was 10.28 seconds behind the winner, Hoxie.

The three teammates also ran in the 4×400 and each qualified for an individual race. Frey ran the 1,600, Harvey the 800 and Flaming the 400.

Kristen Hoffman returns as a state qualifier in the 3,200.

Goessel starts its competitive schedule 4:30 p.m. April 6 at Herington.
