Forming a ?strong core? for Goessel volleyball coach Crysta Guhr are: back row (from left), Jessica Goertzen, Karis Janzen, Aspen Frey; front row, Kendra Flaming, Karina Harvey.

Goessel High School?s volleyball team returns five letter-winners?four of whom are seniors?and has again taken aim at closing the gap that title contenders Moundridge and Inman hold over most of the league.

The Bluebirds went 9-2 in Heart of America league play last year, and posted a 30-12 overall record that included regional and sub-state wins.

Crysta Guhr, coaching her fifth season at Goessel, has three all-league seniors on her roster: hitter Aspen Frey (honorable mention), libero Karina Harvey (second team) and hitter Karis Janzen (second team).

Senior setter Jessica Goertzen and junior hitter Kendra Flaming will also figure prominently in the Bluebird rotation.

Guhr said Goessel has ?a strong core returning this year.?

?They will be looking to further the successes of last year,? she said. ?With many letter-winners returning, the season looks promising.?

Goessel?s season began Tuesday with a triangular at Ell-Saline along with Hope and Elyria. It continues Sept. 8 at Bennington along with Canton-Galva and Trinity.
