The seniors on this fall?s cross-country team at Goessel are: back row (from left), Sara Boman, Kristen Hoffman, Lindsey Wedel; front row, Derek Kruger, Jared Reimer, Laird Goertzen. |
Entering his first year coaching cross country at Goessel High School, coach Derrick Birdsell has 17 runners out for the team.
Based on practice results so far, he believes senior Jared Reimer is likely to hold the No. 1 runner position for the Goessel boys this fall.
He said Derek Kruger and Laird Goertzen will be the team?s second and third runners, and ?after that, it?s wide open.?
Other boys competing include senior Chad Wedel, juniors Lukas Kemkes and Simon Wittenschlaeger, sophomore Stephen Goertzen and freshman Grant Flaming.
For the girls, Birdsell said Kristen Hoffman is the clear-cut No. 1 runner and that every other slot is undefined.
Those vying for varsity roles include seniors Sara Boman and Lindsey Wedel, juniors Shanna Klassen, Alina Szemeitzke, Particia Steffens and Johanna Rumler.
?Practice is going well,? Birdsell said. ?I?ve already seen lots of improvement.?
The Bluebirds? first meet is Thursday at Clearwater.
