Seniors and letter-winners on this year?s Centre High volleyball team are (from left) Amanda Floyd, Allison Shields, Shelby Deines, Carlye Simons and Tori Marler.

With four returning starters in seniors Shelby Deines and Carlye Simons and juniors Tori Marler and Allison Shields, the Centre High School volleyball team will continue to be competitive in the Eisenhower League in Yvonne Burhoop?s 28th year as coach.

Centre posted a 13-15 record last season and graduated two starters.

?We should be in the middle of the pack in the league with the number of starters and letter-winners lost to graduation,? Burhoop said. ?Two starting positions are up in the air.?

Deines, Simons and Shields will be slotted into hitting roles that each have occupied previously, with Marler setting. Junior Amanda Floyd will be libero.

?The development of freshmen will be important to our success,? Burhoop said. ?Four of them are over 5-6 (in height) and have good jumping ability, but they need to improve in all areas to contribute.?

Shields was named all-league in 2008.

Burhoop said four players are vying for starting positions: sophomores D.J. Turner and Theo Kassebaum and freshmen Ellie Miller and Anna Weber.

Centre?s season began Sept. 1 when the Cougars host a quadrangular.
