CVL 15-year-old team 2-1 in state tournament

The Cottonwood Valley League All-Stars 15-and-under Babe Ruth baseball team holds a 2-1 record in state tournament play.

After dropping an opening-round, 14-4 loss to Osawatomie Friday, the team rebounded with a 7-5 victory over the Tri-Valley League all-stars Saturday.

Tanner Klingensmith, Kyle Riffel and Preston Busenitz all doubled. Nick Bray picked up the pitching win, giving up one earned run and walking two hitters while striking out five.

Following a rain delay, CVL defeated the Independence All-Stars, 8-7, Sunday on a suicide squeeze play.

CVL faced a 7-1 deficit in the third inning.

?I told them if we kept them at 7, we would come back and win, and they began to fight their way back into the game,? coach Kelly Nelson said.

Ryan Grant and Reed Wiens each managed three singles and two RBIs. Riffel hit a double, and Caleb Sovde hit two singles.

Grant earned the pitching win in relief, giving up four hits and walking four while striking out four in five innings of work.

?The persistence and comeback ability of this team has really shown through this district and state tournament play,? Nelson said. ?They just refuse to give up on each other.?

The team was scheduled to play Monday. Results were not available by press time.
