Bluebird golf team has state experience, led by Schmidt

A veteran team, including three members with a combined six years of state experience, returns for the Goessel High School golf team this spring.

Three-time Class 1A state qualifier Tyler Schmidt finished 2009 with an eighth-place performance. The senior shot an 80 at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Pretty Prairie.

Shooting an 84, two-time state qualifier Hayden Goert?zen was one stroke away from earning a medal.

Junior Neal Brubaker shot an 88 at state.

That trio, along with classmates Austin Cooper and Aaron Reimer, will fill the first five varsity slots, according to first-year coach Justin Coup.

Juniors Jake Smucker and Kent Duerksen will compete for the sixth and final spot in the lineup. Seven freshmen and sophomores round out the Bluebird roster.

Goessel?s first tournament will be April 6 at Herington. Teams will tee off at 1 p.m.
